About

Welcome to my online portfolio!

I’m a biologist and an artist, and although I’m currently seeking an entry-level laboratory assistant position, I am actively pursuing my artistic interests. Therefore, this blog presents samples of both my art and my research. This is a supplement to my LinkedIn profile, where you can find my current resume and references.

In May 2010, I graduated from Humboldt State University with a Master of Arts in Biology. I studied the effect of copper on neurons in a popular model organism, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Why do we care what copper does to soil nematodes? Well, I could write a whole blog post about that, and will do so sooner or later. Probably I’ll write up something in a breezier tone for the blog if I get frustrated writing the manuscript for publication.

Sometime I should sit down and compare my Adobe Lightroom databases to see if I have more fluorescent micrographs of worms glowing with green fluorescent protein, or photographs I shot with a camera outside the lab instead of a microscope. Although my most recent show, Sense of Wonder, gathers my botanical macrophotography, I also enjoy documenting my travels and the interesting people I encounter. One common thread in my fine art work is that I have taken a naturalistic documentary approach, working with available light and capturing scenes without intervention, rather than composing and lighting still life settings or models.

However, for graphic design work, I enjoy the challenge of setting up a scene to physically manifest the concepts from my imagination, as in the medicine cabinet photo. Although I can apply my photographic skills to design concepts, I am also skilled in Adobe Illustrator and can draw everything from clip art to scientific illustrations. I can also create custom themes for PowerPoint presentations.
